Lunar Eclipse/Halloween

Posted in General on October 31st, 2004

If you missed the lunar eclipse - you’re an idiot, like me. I was surfing slashdot and came across a video of the eclipse. It’s sped up because the actual event took some time, but the feed is from over the Golden Gate Bridge at night which is visible as well. The altitude beacon on top gives you an idea of just how fast this video is sped up. It’s small, but not small enough for me to host here so try to get a download from this link.

In other news - I’m thoroughly annoyed not only at my 1065 professor for not having my grade up like she said she would, as well as my Crim. Law professor who didn’t even SHOW UP on Thursday. I made an appearance for nuthin. I’d really like to know how I performed as I’m to the point where I have only one more opportunity in these classes to make better or similar grades. Only 6 weeks left - bajeeezus! Enough about ECU

Happy Halloween- as Justin & Bonnie could corroborate since they’ve been here to visit me I live in a ‘neighborhood’ of sorts which I suspect is hot for trick-or-treating. Too bad I can’t afford to run out and buy bundles of candy because it’s far from cheap. Probably won’t be here anyways. Those kids probably all go too the rich neighborhoods anyways.

I just got the urge to fly a helicopter to - TTYL :)

O and remember that plane crash right after 9/11 that ended up in a neighborhood around NY city? Well they attribute it to the co-pilot making uneccesary rapid shifts in the rudder to compensate for turbulence on takeoff. This ended up sheering the damn thing off - and for those of you unfamiliar with what a rudder does…without it you’d basically need to turn the plane on its side to make a reasonable shift in the heading. Then those poor schlubs would have their neighbors food on them - from across the aisle. Here’s a link if you’re interested. Flight 587

NPR

While driving the bus - I get sick of “99 dollars down, 99 dollars a month” {because I DESPISE car commercials} - so I flip on over to NPR and make people suffer, but I enjoy listening to the news. Today they were talking about some posters some AIGA (some art organization) members had created to promote voting.

I did the no excuse “vote early” ballot so I’m already taken care of but - here are a few ones I thought were interesting. Heres a link if you’re interested in looking at more.

These are small images - so follow that link for some explanations and more posters.

Remember Pete & Pete on Nickelodeon? Just remembered that as I typed the title..

Ok since I’ve been nagged from all directions to post - I shall post. Even though I really have nothing to say…

Here - I’ll post some emails I’ve received to update you on my life:

Your probation has ended as of October 24th. Please meet with me next time you are in the office to go over your evaluations.

If you have any questions please contact me.

Thanks

Yay - I get a one dollar raise :) Odds are it’ll be two weeks before I meet with him though - Captain Probation is NEVER in his office.

The following is an excerpt from Criminal Justice Internships, Theory into Practice, 4th ed. I thought it might be helpful to you as you contemplate filling out your field application.

1. Develop a “me file”. Include your transcripts, copies of your best term papers, names and addresses of all former residences and employers, and current references.

2. Prepare a resume and cover letter and keep it updated. (If you need help, try typing “resume wizard” into the Word help box and follow the directions. The tool will help you build a resume and you have several choices of style.)

3. List the factors that you should consider in selecting an internship site, in the order of importance to you.

4. Develop a list of possible internship sites from a variety of sources, including your internship advisor, previous interns, and the Internet.

5. Develop questions that you would ask in an internship interview.

^Like I really have time to put all that together - but Ok I’ll get right on that after I take my criminal law exam tomorrow, criminal investigation exam next Tuesday - oh and if you’re wondering if I’ll vote..I ALREADY DID SUCKAS! “No Excuse Ballot”..I still had to stand in line for 15 minutes. Who did I vote for? I voted partisan Independent - just call me the political equivalent of devils advocate. I like to really mix things up. Ok just kidding..

See all that whining got this crappy post. Good Job Guys!

O & Mandy - I added you to my links list. Feel special? I know you do!

I gotta go now cuz I gotta delete some ugly threatening comments by my pushy service provider :) Nite

FBI Seeks Mob Victims’ Remains in N.Y.

By TOM HAYS

NEW YORK (AP) - It’s no place to rest in peace: a vacant lot covered with reeds, slabs of concrete and trash. But federal authorities believe the site in a remote section of Queens could be a graveyard for targets of hits ordered by John Gotti and other mobsters more than two decades ago.

Acting on a tip from an underworld informant, a team of FBI agents has begun digging for the remains of a half dozen or more victims. They include a man whose epitaph could read, “Made the mistake of killing the Dapper Don’s son in a traffic accident.” Another was nicknamed “Lucky.”

No findings were reported during the first four days of digging this week. The job was expected to continue Friday and beyond.

The suspected burial ground is on Ruby Street, just west of Kennedy Airport. Dilapidated homes, abandoned cars and other empty lots, some baited with rat poison, dot the marshy landscape.

On a recent day, traffic was almost nonexistent. Breezes off Jamaica Bay were steady. The desolation suited the Gambino crime family.

“They picked it because it wasn’t far from their stomping grounds and it was secluded,” said Jerry Capeci, a columnist and expert on the Mafia. “But the key thing was that they thought it would never be looked at.”

While no one was looking, Gotti’s crew allegedly used the lot to make the bodies of traitors and enemies - whacked by both their crime family and others - disappear. Two of the dead are believed to be former captains of the Bonanno family, Dominick “Big Trin” Trinchera and Philip “Philly Lucky” Giaccone.

Trinchera, Giaccone and another Bonanno captain, Alphonse “Sonny Red” Indelicato, were shotgunned to death at a Brooklyn social club in 1981 amid an internal struggle for control of the family. Joseph Massino, who later became boss, was convicted earlier this year in the slayings based on the testimony of turncoat mobsters.

After the social club slaughter, the Gambinos agreed to help the Bonannos clean up the mess - though not well enough.

The body of Indelicato was discovered three weeks later by children who spotted his arm poking through the soil. A witness at the Massino trial recounted the mob’s horror.

“We might have a problem,” one soldier said at the time. “The body is rising.”

Authorities retrieved Indelicato’s body at the time and found no others.

But investigators suspect the burials resumed, and that Ruby Street was also the last stop for a neighbor of Gotti’s who disappeared 24 years ago.

John Favara, 51, accidentally struck and killed Gotti’s 12-year-old son with his car in 1980 while the boy was riding a minibike near his home. About four months later, after receiving death threats, Favara was abducted outside a Long Island diner and vanished; Gotti was in Florida at the time.

Gotti - once the nation’s most feared gangster as head of the Gambinos - denied any involvement. But he never hid his rage toward Favara.

“I wouldn’t be sorry if the guy turned up dead,” he told the FBI at the time.

Gotti was sentenced to life in prison for racketeering and murder in 1992 and died behind bars in 2002. By then, Favara was a forgotten footnote in Mafia lore.

But a recent case against the Bonannos produced the fresh tip about Favara’s whereabouts - and the digging began.

Each day, two backhoes claw at the earth, while FBI agents wearing yellow rubber boots pick through the soil with rakes, and cadaver-sniffing dogs roam the ground. The discovery of a bone earlier this week caused a brief stir.

A closer examination revealed that it came from a dead dog.

Life

Posted in General on October 8th, 2004

So I got up at 5:30a today..what time did you get up?

My schedule was as follows today:

6:20am-9am M2
9a-10am A2
11:55a-12:55 M3
1:00p-1:40 A2
2:00p-3:00 Purple
3:00p-4:00 The Mana (haha thanx 108)
5:00p-7:00 Cellulite Express

Most of that may not make much sense to you, but I wanna be able to look back in a semester or so and compare - see if I consider it heavy or weak. Looks like alot, felt like a little - maybe that was because I’ve been numb most the day. Ok I’m shutting up about Transit

In other news - rock’um sock’um politicians are on TV tonight if you’re interested. If not you can watch some funny cartoons that Megan showed me - sheds a whole new light on things.

I really do have a personal opinion on the whole matter but so many other people talk about this stuff I find myself wondering why the hell I’d wanna bring it up after listening to what everyone else had to say. There are other things in life ehh - like how I have a ’stereotype’ branded into my brain everytime I see a black man and his son walking around and what their ‘potential’ is. Thanks Malvo. It really is terrible and unsubstantiated, but hell I can’t help it - it was the first thing that popped in my mind. I gotta work on that.

I’ve discovered a place to eat here across from campus called Miami Subs - they have really good cheesesteak. I’ve eaten there about 3 times this week so far…

This is what happens when I don’t blog for a while - you get it all at once. Who is even reading this? Noone will comment anyways so I guess me and my ip.log will visit…

Heres those links because I think I wanna game now, might write more later about graduation or work or somethin
