Mentality?

Posted in General on September 27th, 2005

Perhaps this gives you an idea of the mentality faced in urban warfare with the Iraqi insurgents…

….now imagine seeing that driving down I-40.

Back to DC…

Posted in General on September 22nd, 2005

Tomorrow morning I’m leaving again for a charter to D.C. for transit.

I’m really only doing this because I need money - I enjoy the challenge of it, but it’s really just gonna be a big pain in the ass. (parking, shuttling, parking, navigating blocked streets [thanks Sheehan], and did I mention parking?)

Anyways I’m gonna try to have a good time - we are staying at the Hotel Harrington in downtown DC near the J. Edgar Hoover building (FBI for you lamen folk). I won’t have time though to do much beyond drive the bus for them, park it (miles away), go get it again and drive them some more. I could bitch some more as I haven’t mentioned more of the crappy details but I’m gonna make the best of it.

Send me text messages!!! I can’t take calls cuz I’ll be roaming.

Oh well..time to go be Captain for a weekend. Farewell.

The Interdictor

Posted in General on September 11th, 2005

Like many others I’ve been reading The Interdictor periodically - it is a first hand account of the situation in New Orleans. The guy is blogging from what looks like the business district of NO in a “secured building” using generators and a dedicated line. He’s also exSpecial Forces so he keeps it simple but informative.

One problem though..before you rotate out…

Sometime around midnight, a squad of 82nd Airborne guys accompanied by a US Marshall busted into our Data Center with their M4-A1s to investigate the lights and movement. Personally, I know they were just bored –

I talked to two guys in US Marshall outfits, and they told us that everyone in the area was private security, themselves included. I asked what possible reason could a hotel have for needing 8 armed guards wielding AR-15s a sniper rifle, shotguns, etc. now that most of the civilians were gone.

With all due respect Mr. Interdictor lets get it straight..it’s U.S. MarshaL - one L, not two.

Other than that - thanks for the hard work and personal insight.

POTD

Posted in General on September 10th, 2005

Every once in a while an Airliners.net POTD (picture of the day) catches my attention and I can’t resist blogging it. Check It Yo!

I was expecting this 19 sqn Phantom to hit the public road, but as I took this picture the pilot pushed to full throttle and missed the airfield fence by inches…..I Was a little shaky and deaf after this experience. I took this photo with a 50mm lens…that’s why

District Court

Posted in General on September 8th, 2005

For the last 3 days I’ve been sitting in a the E/NC Federal District Court under Judge Howard (and the Magistrate Judge Daniel) experiencing first hand the due process afforded to those individuals accused, convicted and sentecned by our federal government. I really have to say…I’m glad I picked the side of law enforcement (delivery v. receiving, hehe) that I did. The other Marshals, Court Clerks and anyone else associated with that system have all been very nice and receptive to me. I’ve put a lot of hours into classes and class work here at ECU and while I’m applying as much as I can to the ‘real thing’ - there’s still nothing like learning from the ‘real thing’. To anyone here reading and still in college please do yourself a favor and participate in the internship program. It’s leaps and bounds beyond anything you can learn in school.

On our first day of District Court Marshal McClish jokingly said “Ok, just help out around here and make sure you look tough”. He was joking - but I’ve done my best to do both (haha). It didn’t take long for me to realize that all the prisoners and most of the court staff think I’m a Marshal. Late this afternoon I had the opportunity to go up and speak with Judge Howard - an honor (but what isn’t to me these days?). We shook hands and Marshal McClish introduced me as the intern and Judge Howards first words were “Oh - well I thought he was a new Marshal”.

The picture above was intended as a joke (see: first day pic entry below) and I just couldn’t get the angle right. The camera picked up the dirt my mirror though..hehe. Of 10 pictures this was the only semi decent one and it sure is crap. I wanted to share anyways.

I dropped by the Transit Garage this afternoon on my lunch break. 3 people asked me if I was carrying…

Apparently I’m doing my job right…:)

Jesus Is Watching You

Posted in General on September 8th, 2005

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shone his flashlight around, looking for valuables, and when he pick up a CD player to place in his sack, a strange disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying, “Jesus is watching you.”

He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight out and froze. When he heard nothing more after a bit, he shook his head, promised himself a vacation after the next big score, then clicked the light back on and began searching for more valuables. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell, he heard “Jesus is watching you.”

Freaked out, he shone his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot.

“Did you say that?” he hissed at the parrot.

“Yep,” the parrot confessed, then squawked, “I’m trying to warn you.”

The burglar relaxed. “Warn me, huh? Who are you?”

“Moses,” replied the parrot. “Moses?” the burglar laughed, “What kind of stupid people would name a parrot Moses?”

“Probably the same kind of people that would name a Rotweiller Jesus.”

;) Thanks B00gie

Blunderbus - 1671

Posted in General on September 5th, 2005

During my brief stint to Key West I picked up a small souvenir - a replica Blunderbus from 1671. It’s very detailed, weighted and just the bomb shizzy for any gun enthusiast.

Since I’ve been home though it’s been sitting on top of my speakers awaiting my plans for it. Today in Target Megan and I came across a “memory box”.

I had originally planned to build one myself or with my grandfather but it didn’t look like it was gonna work out that way ( I don’t get to go home much and I don’t think he’d feel like doing much). So I bought the above instead so that I could go ahead and frame this thing.

…but I need some help. I need a few suggestions as to how I can affix it it diagonally with the stock in the lower left corner and the barrel in the upper right. I already have an idea of how to do it with some small pins that were provided with the box but I’m open to other things if that doesn’t work. I don’t wanna use anything sticky either as it might damage the pistol. The interior backing is similar to that of a corkboard that you can stick pins into but it has a cloth cover over it. I also want to add a little something - a picture or something of that nature relating to the year or the name “Henry John Morgan”.

I come from a very crafty family and I’m probably one of the least creative people you’ll ever meet/know. So Help :)

I googled for blunderbus and my exact one came up so check it out here:

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist

Posted in General on September 5th, 2005

Rehnquist died Saturday at the age of 80, and the Supreme Court announced the arrangements Sunday evening.

To my knowledge Mr. Rehnquist passed away on my 25th birthday - the 3rd day of September 2005. Two open spots on the Supreme Court - in one lifetime - at the SAME time…

It’s very rare from what people say.

As I said in my entry regarded Justice O’Connor - this is big..this is very big.
