White Squirrel

Posted in General on March 30th, 2006

I was flipping thru the channels and came across a special on “North Carolinas Unique Animals” or something of that sort and it wasn’t 10 seconds later that they featured the white squirrel from the small town I grew up in.

If I didn’t know better I’d say that was my grandfathers porch. He hands feeds peanuts to squirrels all the time, but I’ve never seen a white one on his side of town. And much to my surprise theres a whole website dedicated to the ‘White Squirrel Festival‘ held in none other than Brevard, NC. Sorry, just spewing a little southern pride ;)

A little closer to black..

I just wanted to make a note of a small but important accomplishment today. I paid of the second of four credit cards I stupidly and somewhat unknowingly charged up in my early college years.  2 down, 2 to go!  Sadly this is about the only accomplishment I’ve made in a while.

I’m a huge WWII nut and when Joel showed me this article I flipped. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves and leave you with an exert from the website.

From February to September 1944, heavy battles were fought in the narrow, 50 km-wide, Narva front in the northeastern part of Estonia. Over 100,000 men were killed and 300,000 men were wounded there. During battles in the summer of 1944, the tank was captured from the Soviet army and used by the German army. (This is the reason that there are German markings painted on the tank’s exterior.) On 19 September 1944, German troops began an organised retreat along the Narva front. It is suspected that the tank was then purposefully driven into the lake, abandoning it when its captors left the area.

At that time, a local boy walking by the lake Kurtna Matasjarv noticed tank tracks leading into the lake, but not coming out anywhere. For two months he saw air bubbles emerging from the lake. This gave him reason to believe that there must be an armoured vehicle at the lake’s bottom. A few years ago, he told the story to the leader of the local war history club “Otsing”. Together with other club members, Mr Igor Shedunov initiated diving expeditions to the bottom of the lake about a year ago. At the depth of 7 metres they discovered the tank resting under a 3-metre layer of peat.

Death by SPAM

A quick note: Due to overwhelming spam and my shallow investment in matt at av8ur dot com I’ve closed it. You can now reach me at av8ur at av8ur dot com if need be. Perhaps this unoriginal way of posting my new address will keep the web bots off my back for a while.

**edit**

I didn’t anticipate bots having default ‘mail to domain@domain.com’ programming. The aforementioned ‘new’ address is now closed, if you need me I think you already know a way of getting ahold of me, or just leave a comment.

New Look - Phase I

Posted in General on March 15th, 2006

New theme test - this one is a big maccish for me but its the best one I’ve found so far (2 days of searching). I can’t decide if I want to abandon some features from my old blog to facilitate change, or find something that seems a little more fresh but will allow me to retain some of my additions. Orrr..maybe I can find a mix of both.

I hope I can change the fact that you have to click each entry to read the full thing. My pictures deserve front page too! I think those are the only things that attract ppl to read my nonsense.

Let me know what you think!
